History of Country Finca Santa Eulalia (Ref. 047)

Over the next couple of weeks, we look at the remarkable history (some with old photos!) of some of Ibizas villas. Each one showcased is now available to rent.

Situated amongst rolling hills, close to the beach resorts of Es Cana and Santa Eulalia, the location of Country Finca Santa Eulalia (Ref. 047) is not simply down to random chance. To understand more, we have to go back to the middle of the seventeenth century and take a look at the fascinating history of this beautifully modernised old farmhouse.

Life on Ibiza over 300 years ago necessitated complete self-sufficiency, and the farm would have had to supply everything for the family, including meat, eggs, milk etc, and the garden would have provided all vegetables, fruit and pulses.

The villa was built in a very fertile valley, and close to the house was a natural water spring. This was essential, of course, for the horses who pulled their carts all across Ibiza, to stop and quench their thirst. This spring and the original horse paths still exist. A short walk from the villa will bring you to the remains of an oil press which dates back to 1726, an original bread-baking oven and several hundred-year old olive trees.

The villa has remained in the family since its construction and has been adapted to the necessities of each generation. Traditional houses, or fincas, on Ibiza simply extended to grow with the family, and the house was the nucleus around which family life revolved. It was normal for various generations to share the finca from great-grandparents to great-grandchildren, and the generation prior to the current owner still lived cultivating the fields and working the land.

In some photos dating to the beginning of the twentieth century, it is possible to see the original facade which has been left in tact as much as possible, and there are also photos of the family members who lived in the Finca at that time.
