Blasting into the past with Ibiza's Medieval Fair 2019

Acrobats, belly dancers, puppet shows, musicians and the famous market.

Ibiza's hugely popular Medieval Fair, an annual celebration of the island's rich history, is back to transport visitors to a simpler past starting this Thursday evening 9 May.

The event kicks off in Reina Sofia Park on Thursday with a welcoming parade at 18:30 and a Medieval tournament at 21:30, with the magical three-day market running Friday to Sunday, opening at 10:00 each day.

Taking place in the winding streets of Ibiza Town's fortified old town, Dalt Vila, locals and visitors can enjoy the huge range of market stalls lining the ancient lanes leading up to the cathedral.

Magical Medieval madrigals

The streets burst into life with acrobats tumbling, belly dancers wiggling, puppet shows, and musicians delighting the crowds from morning until night.

As you walk upwards you will stumble on tiny chapels holding choral concerts and exhibitions. The display of medieval weapons and instruments of torture is always a particular favourite.

At the market, vendors in medieval costumes sell a tempting selection of fare such as leather goods, jewellery, perfumes, soaps and food stalls with traditional cheeses and sausages.

Street theatre and concerts pop up throughout the weekend and there are some great activities for the whole family.

Kids can have a great time with games, magicians and animal shows. They will love the camel and donkey rides and will be delighted by the pens holding geese and rabbits.

Knights, wizards and witches will teach them about the myths and legends of the island too.

Ibiza's Medieval Festival pays tribute to Ibiza's multi-cultural history of invaders and occupiers which include Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs.

The streets are fairly steep in places so remember your comfy footwear. Spend the day picking up goodies from the market then rest your legs at one of the event's bustling bars to enjoy the entertainment and a cold beer.

Arriving at the top of the old fortified town, you will be rewarded with mouth-dropping panoramic views over Ibiza Town, the Mediterranean and the beautiful island of Formentera.

The Medieval Fair really is an unmissable event in Ibiza's spring calendar, so come and join in the fun.
