Cari Lekebusch has been doing comparatively similar things since before many fresh faced clubbers were born. Needless to say then, after so long in the game, when he makes techno it's of the highest calibre.
His latest LP, You Are A Hybrid Too, marks album number 20, and arrives in the 18th year of his H-Productions imprint. Both are impressive statistics, and when you think of the combined output from artist and label the figures become even more astounding, given the reliability therein.
Proud, but far from predictable, his is a sound well exhibited here on Approaching Singularity, wherein mechanical bass hums create a warm timbre, nodding to more innocent days gone by, before everyone got so worried about size, when big rooms meant powerful tunes. That said, it's important to note that you're far more likely to wind up with your head close to the floor as oppose to hands reaching for the ceiling.
This 21st Century soul ethic- wherein repetitive bleeps and beats set to resonant tones create something truly liberating- is evident further into the record too. Monatomic Measure is a wonderful example of stripped simplicity, bordering on Rob Hood style minimalism, with its background symphony of filtered hoovers and rolling, bouncing baritone having very little else aside from hi-hats to rely on. Yet things sound large as life itself. Rightly unabashed, and unleashed, it's a rhythmic, twisted-groove infected shot of Adrenochrome no less.
And this energy rarely lets up, even when tempo is altered. Out of Nowhere is an arrangement of lunging bass and sharp, analogue melodies married to heavyweight, wide load Swedish kicks. The foot is off the pedal, comparatively speaking, but the heart is still in it. Again no rules are being fractured and there's not much new ground being covered. But this is beside the point when the final product is so repeat- playable, and, like everything else on here, serves to remind us all why this particular Swede has enjoyed such longevity; may it continue.
