Album of the week: Joris Voorn 'Fabric 83'

An eclectic and intricately woven journey into Joris Voorn’s favourites.

Artist: Various (compiled and mixed by Joris Voorn)
Album: Fabric 83
Label: Fabric
Release date: 21/08/15

Fabric 83 is one of those albums which needs no presentation. The London nightclub has been running successful compilations since 2001, so, as you can expect, it is a gem I've been waiting for with enthusiasm. Be that as it may, Fabric 83 is one of those albums which comes to shake the minds and the ears of all of those who blindly trust in Joris Voorn taste and talent, a musical journey that brilliantly blurs the boundaries between a set, a DJ mix and an album with the very special touch of the Dutch producer. A 65-track compression, cut, chopped and edited together to sound like a unique whole, thanks to the creative freedom and studio skills achieved along Voorn's musical career.

After pressing PLAY, the first sounds introduce you into Voorn's world with a groovy and slow start — chillout beats and Hindu ragas included — which builds as the tracks progress, layering different textures and looping one on top of the other in a surprisingly natural way, including hits like our dearest Plastikman's Consumed. Emotive time when the beautiful vocals of Howlings, the collaboration between Frank Wiedemann (Âme) and the Australian singer Ry X (The Acid) turn into John Tejada's Two 0 One hit. Voorn's pulsing beats and harmonic twists clearly appear in the style of Fall —from his Nobody Knows remix album— Where Have You Gone and Looks Fake Obviously, among other original productions. After the first half of the album, the intensity grows considerably, with a harder bass-line and tunes like Robert Hood's A.M. or the '90s classic Shadow Boxing by Nasty Habits flowing by our ears and fueling our desire to drop into a dancefloor. Other moments worth highlighting are the absolutely awesome mix between Joran van Pol's Exist and Speedy J's Fill 17, and the apocalyptic album ending. I could keep going, but I don't want to reveal the whole master piece.

An eclectic and heavily layered album, really easy to listen to and not necessarily for the dance floor. The compilation is emotive with tidal sentimentality, jumping from nostalgia to happiness in a few tracks. An excellent choice of tunes from an artist who clearly deserves to fly on the Fabric wings.
