Review: Defected in the House at Booom, 15th July

Ibiza sports sound-proof walls, over-sized speakers and superstar DJs all in one night...

There was an explosion of eager revellers on the street opposite the island's marina last night. Even though half one is considered early doors by Ibiza standards, Booom was already bursting to the seams with clubbers at that time, so much so that they were full capacity and turning guestlist away. This reinforces how popular the Tuesday night event has been for the venue that is only in its second season. Defected In The House is not only a team that is pro at throwing parties but a successful house label with their finger on the pulse to spot music trends, often creating them themselves. This particular week the Defected squad definitely delivered a delicious line-up with MK, Shadow Child, Toddla T and Franky Rizardo all taking to the decks.

I finally swam against the tidal wave of party-goers clambering to get in, to be greeted with a sea of ravers inside. Toddla T was in the booth spinning a pumping remix of Angie Stone's Wish I Didn't Miss You to the singing crowd. The party was already in full swing.

The 1000 capacity club has a simple lay-out; it's box-like with a teaming dance floor in the center and the VIP platforms laced around the outside. It's intimate, dark and compact; hard raving in a simple, undiluted form. Booom doesn't arm itself with elaborate stage production, there's only royal blue laser lights slicing through the crowd and the word DEFECTED in lights overhead. No, this nightspot is all about the music. It's the only venue in the whole of Ibiza with a custom-made Pioneer sound system, which it shows off proudly thanks to the gigantic speakers sitting in the corner of the room, towering easily over six foot. The beats are so intense that the club is completely sound-proof, keeping the music in and the neighbours happy.

The familiar bass line from Ten Walls' Walking with Elephants rolls out and the clubbers react instantly, cheering. The energy from the ravers continued through to half three when MK, the DJ responsible for last year's monster remix Look Right Through, arrived in the booth. It was clear that he was the main attraction for many as he opened his set to ‘whooops' and applause. The American danced as he played and even though, in my opinion, it was too late a time for the main act to perform, the atmosphere never dropped. Wearing a black baseball cap and simple sweatshirt, MK's set was loaded with keyboard-based beats, funky remixes and of course the usual MK classics.

The packed out parties are set to continue throughout the season as the line-ups read like a who's who of the house movement. Defected In The House and Booom are the perfect partnership for music-savvy fans who are all about the quality of songs and sounds. If this is your Tuesday of choice make sure you get down extra early to avoid being turned away from the intimate event.
