Imagine that you're the tourist boss of Ibiza and you've just been presented with a golden opportunity to attract lots of visitors with high acquisitive power to the island. What do you think are the best bits of Ibiza to demonstrate how fab it is?
Well, that's exactly the situation that tourist chiefs are in at the moment during a visit – a fam trip (fam = familiarisation) – by representatives of two American cruise lines, Paul Gaugin Cruises and Silversea Cruises, organised by the Office of Spanish Tourism in Miami and The Ibiza Port Authority.
Obviously the aim, given the spending power of their passengers, is to tempt these two lines to bring their enormous cruise ships to Ibiza by showing off the best aspects of Ibiza – both its exclusive high end venues and those available to everybody.
So, cruise bosses have enjoyed the pleasures of the Punic burial ground at Puig des Molins, a theatrical tour of Dalt Vila interspersed with actors in historical costume, snorkelling at Cala Tarida, a visit to Ushuaïa Beach Hotel, the sunset at Café del Mar, Dinner at Cipriani's, the Punta Arabi Hippy Market, lunch at Atzaro Beach Bar (photo) and a trip to Formentera.
Well, would you be impressed enough to bring a cruise ship here on that showing? Answers on a ten pound note to the usual address please.
