Another passenger record has been broken at Ibiza airport where over one million (1,070,635 to be exact) passengers passed through in the month of July. That's a slight increase over the previous year which was also a record breaker.
It's a pattern which is being repeated at other airports in both the Balearics (Mallorca – 3.4 million passengers and Menorca – 0.5 million) and Spain in general.
The black cloud of this silver lining is that total figures for the year are slightly down and highlight a worrying trend that the Spanish call 'seasonalisation' which occurs when too many people all want to go to the same place in a shorter period of time.
The fact that of the 112 million passengers in all Spanish airports in the seven months of this year, 22 million (one fifth) were in July, illustrates this point. The difference in passenger numbers between winter and summer in Ibiza is even more extreme as my photo of the departure lounge in winter shows.
