Ibiza's Salt Fair (Feria de la Sal) is back for 2019 this weekend from tomorrow on 25 October with a three-day event about salt and local life and culture.
A wide programme of activities is available in Sant Jordi and within the Las Salinas nature reserve.
Several local restaurants are offering fixed-price menus called “Menus Saliners”, that use locally harvested salt and that give salt star billing in the dishes.
On the first day, the 25th, from early evening, children and families get in on the act first with street theatre, entertainments and face painting in Sant Jordi's main square.
Saturday the 26th is the big day of activities, when from the morning, you'll have plenty to keep you amused with a craft market, an acrobat display, a photography exhibition, workshops for kids to make toys and animals and an open air concert at midday.
Displays of food and cocktails made, where salt really enhances flavour, are on offer as is a free food tasting of the traditional Ibizan dish ossos amb col, or bones with cabbage - tasting is believing.
On Sunday, the final day, the action moves to the nature reserve of Las Salinas where the day is officially opened by a fogueró, the traditional bonfire used to send smoke signals to call in the workers to start the annual salt harvest.
On this day, you can enjoy a dramatised visit to the Sal Rossa pirate tower; learn about the importance of the Pou des Carbó well or go on a bracing Nordic Walk around the interior of the salt plains.
Salt, still Ibiza's biggest export, has been harvested on the island for millennia, once helping make Ibiza Town one of the Mediterannean's richest coastal cities.
