Glitterbox opening party extravaganza

One of Ibiza’s most flamboyant parties returns to Hï Ibiza with a massive bang.

Kicking off June in Ibiza with more glitz, glam and sparkles than ever, Glitterbox returned for its fifth season - its second at Hï Ibiza - this past Friday continuing to boogie its way to the top of our Hï expectations.

With a name like Glitterbox, it's no surprise that the crowd took on the invitation to truly sparkle, raiding their wardrobes with the most ostentatious outfits they could find. This party leaves you finding glitter in places you didn't know it could get to. You won't be able to scrub off the excitement from this party any time soon either.

Glitterbox's second summer at Playa d'en Bossa's glitziest venue Hï Ibiza could not have started any better. As we entered the glamorous super-club, it became clear how much the new design aesthetics suit the theatrical Glitterbox vibe.

Here's how the night went down.

Purple Disco Machine kicked off the disco fiesta with chilled, funky disco sounds and an array of vibrant coloured lights shining off the hundreds of giant disco balls suspended from the ceiling.

The crowd were digging it from the off, and as the dance floor began to fill, the deep-funk guru brought a selection of disco gems including his own epic remix of The Shapeshifters Lola's Theme Recut.

This tune set the tempo and anticipation higher as the crowd's volume increased. Claps and whistles filled the room along with smoke cannons mystifying the dancefloor.

Of course, Purple Disco Machine could not but please the begging crowd with one of his own most popular tracks, Body Funk.

Hï Ibiza was popping and the disco bonanza was in full swing. In the Club room, Melvo Baptiste continued to play fist-pumping disco bangers, including the David Penn remix of Gianni Bini's The City Of Free Love.

Even if you went for a pit-stop to the restrooms, the party doesn't stop there. Jonjo Jury and John Morales made emptying our booze-fuelled bladders an exotic experience as they echoed the room with more and more vibey disco beats, such as Afro Medusa's Pasilda.

A bright multi-coloured disco ceiling illuminated the rainbow room, making it impossible not to wear a face-aching grin. These are definitely some of the coolest, funkiest and craziest restrooms ever.

Back in the Theatre, the party got a hell of a lot louder as the almighty Basement Jaxx took to the decks and the production got even wilder.

The most glamorous 6ft drag queens in killer stilettoes and sparkly thongs cat-walked through the wacky crowd onto the podiums and up on stage. As the dancers performed elegantly in fantastical unicorn headbands, some massive disco classics emerged from the English electronic duo.

Basement Jaxx then dropped I Feel Love (1979 Disco Club Mix) from DJ Pierre feat. Chic Loren. The heavens opened as the lights brightened, showering us with millions of golden confetti. Glitter shined from corner to corner of the packed dancefloor. This was a magical moment.

As the lights dimmed once again, the music diminished briefly as our ears were blessed by the ripping of the iconic guitar in the opening of what was the standout song of the night: Where's Your Head At.

All were compelled to scream along with the unforgettable noughties banger. The energy in the room was almost too much to handle as everyone let loose jumping and dancing like nobody was watching - truly electrifying.

As Basement Jaxx closed their outrageous set, none other than Barbara Tucker filled the room with her insane vocals. She got the crowd to raise their hands and clap while she belted her hit featuring Darryl D'Bonneau, Stop Playing With My Mind.

Barbara absolutely killed her performance with soulful vocals so intense that the disco balls were shaking and the room was vibrating.

As she ended her performance, she introduced the legendary Roger Sanchez to the decks by singing happy birthday to the Grammy-award winner and Ibiza stalwart. The crowd went wild cheering. Everyone was pumped to have an epic birthday party for the Hella Good house king.

The night was definitely not over yet as we rolled into the final chapter of the Glitterbox fantasia to big tunes and remixes including a mash-up of Riva Starr ft. Rssl Hand In Head (Technasia Remix) overlapped with the acapella of Rolland Clark I Get Deep.

Endless disco beats followed keeping us bobbing for hours, but you're going to have to check out the frenzy for yourself as the Glitterbox party will continue to shine brightly in Ibiza every Friday until 28 September.

The star-studded line-up for the season include Armand Van Helden, Basement Jaxx (DJ set), Cassius, Derrick Carter, Dimitri From Paris, Greg Wilson, Groove Armada (DJ set), Horse Meat Disco, Joey Negro, Kenny Dope, Nightmares on Wax, Roger Sanchez, Todd Terry, Masters At Work and many more.

So get ready for glitter, glitter and more glitter.
