Review: Ginger - Asian food and rooftop heaven

Far East in Ibiza.

Sa Punta in Talamanca has long been amongst the most instantly recognisable and well-known names on the Ibiza restaurant scene. Located at the far side of Talamanca bay, it has been a go-to choice for food lovers for over a decade and has one of the most iconic restaurant views on the island. In 2014 two new dining experiences were added to the Sa Punta portfolio, with Patchwork and Ginger providing distant culinary concepts in uniquely designed rooftop settings; Patchwork becoming the first Lebanese inspired eatery on the island and Ginger focussing on Asian food.

A trip to the Far East

Upon arrival at Sa Punta, I was delighted to find myself being led up some stairs to a secret rooftop area I didn't know even existed and being transported to another place altogether thanks to the decor and ambience. We had stepped from the shores of the Mediterranean into the world of Ginger, and with it discovered a hidden slice of the Far East in Ibiza. I was immediately struck by the intimate and exclusive feel of the location, which along with brightly coloured decorative parasols, and natural wooden tone throughout, felt like you've taken a trip into a secret Japanese garden. Luckily also, from this rooftop setting, Ginger enjoys the same stunning views of Dalt Vila and Talamanca as the elder brother that Sa Punta is famous for.

It's good to share

The depth behind its identification as an 'Asian Food Bar' is presented in an easy to navigate menu separated into easy to understand categories of Fresh & Raw, Dumpling, Crispy and Hot Dish, with the emphasis very much on sharing multiple plates that journeys from Thailand, with chicken, ginger and lime gyosas or crunchy fish cakes, through to Chinese inspired classics like the prawn dim sum or chicken spring rolls. Also, and including of course, tasty sashimi options such as yellowtail and red tuna amongst other Japanese flavours. There is even room for some Indian influence with a madras curry.

Many of these dishes are hand selected and influenced by the travels across Asia of Sa Punta's owner Rodolfo and brought to life by Diego Dechecco, the Executive Chef who has worked at Sa Punta for 9 years, with his team of 20 in the kitchen. In the process of trying most of the options on the menu between our group, it was obvious that the ingredients and food quality really are of the highest standard, with exotic detail - such as use of fruits like Yuzu and the Chinese pomelo - providing an authentic Asian feel. Whilst my personal taste was for the crunchy options, particularly the Peking duck rolls (which came accompanied by an exquisite oyster and plum sauce) it was the raw choices that really shone for me. There is no compromise on excellence when serving food such as this and the red tuna and wild seabass ceviche had my taste buds gushing.

The perfect meeting point

Ginger is the ideal place to meet people for almost any situation. Its exclusive and secluded feel belies its easily accessible location, a short drive away from Ibiza Town with ample parking space. It's also perfect walking distance (15-20 minutes) from the Marina Botafoch area, with the stroll alongside the Med taking you from one side of Talamanca Bay to the other. Our group of 5 enjoyed over 15 dishes and tried different cocktails and sampled desserts (there are various cakes and chocolate options). Whether dining as a couple for a romantic occasion or as a larger group wanting affordable luxury, or whether you just want a quick snack or meeting point for a cocktail, Ginger has got you covered. We mean that literally as well because when the sea breeze gets a little chilly, expect one of the staff to be wrapping a blanket around you too.
