San Isidro in Ibiza

Ibiza may be the coolest island on earth but its rich country traditions

Ibiza may be the coolest island on earth but its rich country traditions are still celebrated with gusto by the local people.

This Sunday observed the Fiesta of San Isidro, the patron saint of peasants and also Madrid. Known as Sant Isidre in Catalan, his day brings together all facets of country living in one place – San Jose village centre.

On show were examples of local breeds of animals, sheep, goats, hens, pigs, ducks, and of course the local hunting dogs, Podencos. Produce from the island was also on sale – ecologically grown vegetables, honey, olive oil, wine, cacti, succulents and plants.

And to see how things used to be done in the old days, traditionally dressed country folk were making straw shoes, baskets, spinning wool, making lace and tapestries.

The culmination of the fiesta was a big parade of wonderfully preserved horse -drawn carts in front of a large appreciative crowd.

Here are some more photos of the day.
