If there was ever any doubt that we're still just country bumpkins at heart in Ibiza then events planned for this weekend will put an end to it.
This Sunday the first ever Spanish Championship of Hunting with Podencos takes place in Ibiza. Podencos, our local game dogs, have the appearance of greyhounds and are used extensively to hunt rabbits. Over 270 dogs from Ibiza and the rest of Spain are due to gather at the Recinto Ferial conference centre at 6 am on Sunday morning from whence they will travel to selected areas to hunt for 5 hours. Later in the day there will be shows, competitions and a grand lunch and prize giving.
Unhappily for some the warm autumn weather - so far November has been the warmest on record - combined with a distinct absence of rain has left its mark on the mushroom crop. There hasn't been one! So the organisers of the great mushroom hunt of Santa Gertrudis have had to postpone their popular and annual excursion (part of the village's festivities) until December 17th. Hopefully by then it will be cool and damp enough for the fungi in the area!
