Ever noticed that on the one day of the year when water temperatures rise to lukewarm in Manchester, that the local paper’s headlines are always, ‘Phew, it’s hotter than Ibiza.’
Manchester journalists would have run out of headlines had they just endured the July we’ve just had in Ibiza – the hottest since records began 40 years ago.
The average temperature throughout the whole month was a staggering 26.8 centigrade! Of July’s 31 days over a third ‘enjoyed’ temperatures over 33 degrees, and in the new colour system of weather warnings, we were on amber alert 7 times for temperatures up to 37 degrees and red alert on 21st July when the mercury hit 38.2!
Add to this the almost total lack of rain and sea temperatures above average and it’s easy to see why the demand for electricity to power air conditioning units has gone through the roof.
The weather experts are forecasting that August could be equally as hot so our advice to any Mancunians heading this way is don’t bring your waterproofs.
