Bruce, Danny, Nathan and Fee formed The Whip in 2006 and have had a pretty mixed reception into the music scene with some critics really getting their sound and some maybe not so much. Integrating rock-band culture with the world of electronic dance music was always going to be risky but strangely enough there's something about this band that really works.
Having had huge success with their single Trash (2008) which appeared in various promotional videos, adverts, sitcoms and video games The Whip clearly have great potential and seem to of found their niche. Their track My secret weapon (Alex Metric remix) also won Mixmag's electro tune of the month last October.
Their latest release Movement captures their unique sound, supported by the video which powerfully expresses the band's eccentricity. Both the lyrics and video give out a strong message of freedom and expressiveness which sums up the groups portfolio of work.
The Whip's 2012 resolutions mix is crammed with futuristic electro beeps and the keyboard is a very prominent feature throughout. Although at times the video game sounds border on over repetitive they do undoubtedly get the bands fresh rhythm pulsing through your veins and without realising it your foots been going mental for the last ten minutes.
Their sound has commonly been described as electronic pop but I think it is more of a cleverly entwined fusion between indie, electro and pop with some underground basslines. With their latest release Movement they take a more indie-progressive route and there are some great remixes of the track available, I particularly like Sona Vabos's remix as it goes a little deeper. The 2012 resolution mix also explores a deeper almost tech sound and holds off on some of the more electro beats, which I loved but saying that I wouldn't want The Whip to lose thier futuristic flare as it is what makes them unique.
With their UK tour kicking off in February it's an exciting time for the band and I am personally really looking forward to seeing what else they have up their sleeve.
